Before he got any bars, he came across a land line at the Verlot Ranger Station about 15 miles from the caves. It was 40 to 45 minutes after he first set out to get help. Hoffman has heard talk about perhaps shutting down the ice caves following this most recent fatal collapse. He hopes a proposed plan by the Forest Service to install a new land line about five miles from the caves at the Silverton campground will prevent them from closing. “A phone seems like a fantastic compromise if we can get it pretty close to the,” Hoffman said.
